SUMMER TERM 1 2014.

It's the last term in Y1 already. This year has gone so quickly.

Literacy
This topic is based on minibeasts and we will be reading the book  "The Hungry Caterpillar". We will be writing facts about our favourite minibeasts.  We will also be looking at "pupil led writing" finding out what the children want to write about and following their ideas.

We are thrilled with the children's progress in reading and thank you for all of your hard work at home. It has really made a huge difference to reading standards in school. Don't forget the updated Bug Club website .We also really value your feedback in the home reading record as this also helps your child's progress.

Mathematics
This half term the children will be concentrating on subtraction and measuring (capacity). We will also be reinforcing money calculations and of course basic number skills.
Something else new. We will be teaching the children how to solve problems-- where to start and how to decide whether the sums are addition or subtraction etc.
Sumdog continues to be very popular and the chlidren's mental maths is very good.

Personal and Social Development
Our SEAL topic is  "Relationships" and our values topic is "Freedom". RE is about "Special Books". We will be looking at questions like "What book is special to you?" and "How do you show that something is very special to you?

Knowledge and Understanding
This is linked to our literacy topic of minibeasts. We will identify some animals and plants that live in the outdoor environment. We will also discover how animals use their senses and how their senses can be important to their survival.

In Science we will be looking at plants and animals in our environment and how they are affected by the seasons. We will be asking the children what they would like to plant in our outdoor area. They will then have to look after these plants and measure their growth over time.

We will look at differences between plants and animals and start to group them according to their characteristics.

Welsh
The theme for this half term is animals. Mrs. Jarvis teaches the class Welsh and she has been surprised at the amount of Welsh they have remembered already. They will talk about animals in their family and which pets they would like to have.

Physical
The children will be doing P.E on Wednesday for both classes.

Creative
DT: The children will be designing and making their own hand puppet. They will plan, make and evaluate their work. They can make a character from the book or make a character from their own imagination.

Music. Our topic is "Rain, rain go away". This is also linked to our minibeast topic. We will look at minibeast manoeurvres and the affects of weather on our wildlife.

HOMEWORK
The children have worked hard with their homework and this will continue this term. Homework will again include:-

BUG CLUB.
All children are allocated a reading book on line. Their names and passwords are written on the front cover of their homework books. These reading books change every Friday.
Children will now get certificates for any reading books that have 3 parent signatures per week.

SUMDOG
This is a maths, on line games website. The games have been levelled to suit our children. Again the user names and passwords are on the front cover of their homework books. The children start off as an animal rank. As they play the games and practise their maths they progress to different animal ranks. Some children have already progressed through 4 animal rankings and answered hundreds of maths sums. Great fun and brilliant for mental maths.

Weekly maths homework will be given.

SPELLING.
Fortnightly spellings continue with tests every week. An extra week has been allotted for any spelling mistakes children make.

Pupil Voice
Every week the children will be asked what they want to find out in their learning and their ideas will be developed through our weekly planning.

Y1 trip.
We had a great time on our school trip to St Fagans. The children really learnt a lot about wildlife on the Nature Trail. Please visit Our Gallery to enjoy the pictures of our visit.

Thank you all for your continued support. It is appreciated by us all.
